DETECT AND PROFILE AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

A real-world AI-based infrastructure for screening and prediction of progression in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) providing accessible shared care

EUROPEAN COUNCIL OF OPTOMETRY AND OPTICS

The European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO) represents the interests of optometrists and opticians across Europe. Our members are national professional associations from 25 countries who together represent more than 200,000 opticians and optometrists. ECOO aims to promote eye health to the public across borders and to harmonise clinical and educational standards of optometric and optical practice throughout Europe.

Role in I-SCREEN

ECOO is the lead on Work Package 4 entitled “AI-based detection of AMD in community-based low-cost OCT imaging.“ ECOO's task is to build and manage a network of optical/optometric practices to perform OCT images in people older than 55 years still having functional vision. Overall 5000 patients are expected to be screened and their OCT images uploaded to be analysed for early/intermediate AMD by the retinal expert group of the Medical University of Vienna. This will ultimately enable the evaluation of the usability of AI to detect early disease in community-based low budget OCT imaging. As the European umbrella association for optometry and optics, ECOO has the necessary expertise and network to set-up and manage Work Package 4. This Work Package has not only a strong multi-national aspect but also promotes the cross-disciplinary collaboration between optical/optometric sites and clinical partners.
