What if your local optometrist could detect the risk of serious eye disease years before symptoms appear, during a routine eye check-up?

On AI Appreciation Day, the I-SCREEN project is highlighting how artificial intelligence is transforming community eye care across Europe. By collecting 5,000 OCT (optical coherence tomography) eye scans from local optometry practices, I-SCREEN is training an AI tool to detect the earliest signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

This technology doesn’t replace the expertise of healthcare professionals, it enhances it. AI becomes a powerful ally in supporting optometrists to catch diseases earlier, leading to faster diagnoses, earlier treatments, and better outcomes for patients.

As I-SCREEN shows, AI isn't just about automation, it's about empowering care.
