DETECT AND PROFILE AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

A real-world AI-based infrastructure for screening and prediction of progression in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) providing accessible shared care

I-SCREEN: Bringing Earlier AMD Detection Into the High Street Practice

Age related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries and affects an estimated 67 million people across the EU, around 10 million of them at the sight threatening late stage. It often produces no noticeable symptoms until central vision is already going, and sight lost at the late stage does not come back.

Detection therefore has to happen early, and close to where people are.

I-SCREEN is developing an AI infrastructure that analyses OCT scans in local optometry and optician practices, allowing AMD to be identified at an earlier stage and the risk of progression to be assessed before serious damage occurs. Patients who need specialist attention can then be referred in good time, through the eye care professional they already visit.

Earlier detection. Better informed referral. Care that reaches people where they are.
