DETECT AND PROFILE AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

A real-world AI-based infrastructure for screening and prediction of progression in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) providing accessible shared care

Community Eye Care Can Help Detect AMD Earlier

As part of the I-SCREEN initiative, Work Package 4 (WP4), coordinated by the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO), is piloting a new community-based screening model designed to spot age-related macular degeneration (AMD) sooner, right at the local optician’s practice.

Through this approach, opticians and optometrists capture OCT scans during routine eye exams and upload them securely to the RetInSight platform. There, retina specialists from MedUni Vienna review the images, which are also used to train AI tools that support early detection of AMD.

This integrated pathway allows for faster feedback, timely referrals, and a more seamless link between community practices and specialist clinics, helping reduce delays in care.
